The City of Austin’s Homeless Strategy Office (HSO) has introduced a new funding opportunity, allocating up to $300,000 for supportive services and limited financial assistance aimed at families experiencing homelessness. This initiative is funded through the City of Austin General Fund and was approved by the City Council as part of the Fiscal Year 2025 budget.

The funding aims to help families stabilize their housing situations or transition out of homelessness. Eligible organizations can apply until June 12, 2025, with the request for applications being released today.

David Gray, City of Austin’s Homeless Strategy Officer, emphasized the broader impact of this funding: “This funding opportunity is about more than addressing immediate challenges—it’s about equipping families with the tools to build lasting stability at home. By strengthening family foundations, we’re helping parents cover essential needs and connect with vital resources—while paving the way for brighter, healthier futures for their children.”

Funds may be utilized to assist families in securing appropriate housing or provide short-term services that link households to benefits and resources designed to enhance stability and prevent future homelessness. The initiative also seeks to improve housing outcomes by enhancing coordination among service providers, including those focused on very low-income families such as healthcare providers, schools, workforce development agencies, youth programs, and counseling services.

District 5 Council Member Ryan Alter supported this initiative: “No one should be without a home or a place to sleep. That is especially true for our families trying to raise children. That is why I authored this budget amendment to address family homelessness in Austin so that we can ensure every child has the chance to grow up and pursue their dreams.”

Contracts are expected to commence on September 1, 2025. The terms are subject to approval by the Austin City Council and agreement on compliance and performance expectations.
