Austin apartment managers take action to educate communities on composting

Composting collection at apartments and other multifamily properties is a relatively new concept for many in Austin, including property managers. The initial steps involve hiring a licensed hauler and providing convenient access to composting facilities. Most multifamily properties in Austin have already completed these steps following the city’s updated rules introduced in Fall 2024.

Property managers must now focus on educating their communities about composting, as required by city ordinance. This educational effort is crucial for the success of any composting program. Managers are tasked with ensuring that residents and staff understand all aspects of the composting process. They must also summarize these educational efforts as part of a reporting requirement.

Education begins when residents move into a property or when staff start working there. It includes annual re-education, updates on program changes, posting signs that meet city specifications, and doing so in at least two languages.

The city provides resources to assist managers with this task, including educational videos, flyers, templates, multilingual signs, customizable sign software, training logs, and presentations.

Consistent communication is essential for learning the basics of composting at apartments and condos. This was also necessary when recycling collection began several years ago—a practice that has become more familiar over time with consistent reminders.

For those interested in best practices for managing composting collection, a quick training session conducted by the city with the Austin Apartment Association in spring 2025 is available. Property managers are encouraged to reach out with any questions they may have along the way.
