Austin Energy, the public power utility of Austin, is celebrating 130 years of service. The utility first illuminated the city’s moonlight towers in 1895 and continues to honor its legacy while planning for the future.
The public is invited to commemorate this milestone with coffee and doughnuts at an event featuring an official proclamation recognizing Austin Energy’s long-standing service. Attendees can also view a replica of the moonlight tower and learn about the utility’s history.
Although inclement weather has led to the cancellation of a ceremonial moonlight tower lighting on May 6, festivities will proceed on Thursday, May 8. Austin Energy’s leadership will be joined by its five longest-serving employees to accept the honor.
Austin Energy employs nearly 2,000 individuals dedicated to more than just maintaining electrical services. The utility emphasizes energy conservation, clean energy initiatives, customer assistance programs, and reliable electric service as part of its commitment to community value.
Stuart Reilly, interim general manager of Austin Energy, stated: “The essential services that Austin Energy provides are even more important today, as we are not only powering our community, we are helping to power Austin’s economy. I am so proud of the contributions Austin Energy has made to this community for the last 130 years and the work we will do for years to come.”
