People driving in Austin should be aware of new parking regulations. The City Council approved three new parking prohibitions on February 13, 2025, and enforcement began on June 1.

Under the updated ordinance, drivers may be ticketed for violations related to electric vehicle and special events ordinances. The bicycle lane ordinance introduces a change to the City Code. It has never been legal to park an automobile in bike lanes with signs saying “No Parking in Bike Lane.” Now, it is illegal to park in any bike lane, regardless of signage. If a lane is clearly marked as a bike lane with striping or barriers, motor vehicles are not allowed there.

Exceptions exist for this provision.

Bicycles are considered crucial for alleviating traffic congestion in Austin. Blocked bike lanes force cyclists into car lanes, slowing traffic and increasing risk. To ensure safety and maintain traffic flow, it is important to keep these lanes clear.

Illegally parked automobiles in bike lanes can be reported to Austin 3-1-1.
