The Austin Police Department’s Lake Patrol Unit will enforce a city ordinance prohibiting the use of personal watercraft on Lake Austin during the Memorial Day weekend. The ban, which includes wet bikes and motorized surfboards, begins at sunset on May 23, 2025, and ends at sunrise on May 27, 2025. This measure is part of Ordinance 8-5-81.

Non-motorized vessels such as kayaks and paddleboards are still permitted. The annual restriction aims to ensure safety for those using the lake over the holiday weekend.

Officers will patrol the area to ensure compliance with the Texas Water Safety Act and local boating laws. “Police urge all boaters to practice safe boating and to call 9-1-1 for all reckless operation of boats or emergencies,” stated officials.

Both the Austin Parks and Recreation Department and the police department encourage safe enjoyment of local parks and lakes during this period.

The ordinance specifies that certain watercraft are prohibited not only during Memorial Day but also around Labor Day and Independence Day holidays. It mandates that motorboats stay on the right side of Lake Austin unless assisting a downed skier and advises against operating any watercraft at unsafe speeds.
