The Austin Police Department (APD) has announced that its Homicide Unit achieved a 100% clearance rate for all homicides committed in 2023. This marks the first time this milestone has been reached since 2005. The final arrest, related to an October 14, 2023 case, was made on May 7, 2025.

In 2005, Austin recorded and solved 26 homicides. In contrast, there were 75 homicides in 2023, making this achievement notable given the increased volume and complexity of investigations today. The national homicide clearance rate for the same year stood at 57.8%.

Detectives worked diligently on these cases by pursuing leads through video footage analysis, witness interviews, and forensic evidence development. Their commitment extended over months or even years to ensure every investigative avenue was explored to bring justice to victims’ families.

APD Homicide Sergeant Nathan Sexton stated, “We feel this achievement is a reflection of our community who cares about justice and holding their fellow citizens accountable for taking the lives of others. This in turn has helped make our community a safer place.” He added that reaching this level of resolution reflects the dedication and relentless pursuit of justice by the unit.

The success was not solely due to the Homicide Unit’s efforts but also involved critical support from other units and law enforcement partners. These included assistance from agencies such as the Travis County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO), U.S. Marshals Service (USMS), Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), among others.

The APD Homicide Unit comprises 16 detectives and two sergeants who have consistently maintained one of the highest clearance rates nationally despite rising homicide numbers over recent years.

The department reiterated its commitment to solving violent crimes and bringing justice to victims and their families. It reminded the community that taking someone’s life is a crime that will not be tolerated in Austin.
