Austin police investigate fatal shooting and vehicle theft near Del Valle Elementary

On May 3, 2025, at approximately 3:21 a.m., the Travis County Sheriff’s Office received a report from a family in the Sun Chase Neighborhood about their vehicle being stolen. Simultaneously, the Austin Police Department (APD) was alerted to an incident where a person was struck by a vehicle near Ross Road and Thome Valley Drive, close to Del Valle Elementary School.

The victim of this incident was identified as Anthony Salas, who was attempting to recover his family’s stolen vehicle when he was shot and subsequently hit by the vehicle. The APD’s Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Specialists were on-site to process multiple scenes and gather witness statements.

The preliminary investigation has led detectives to identify several persons of interest. These individuals were reportedly seen on camera burglarizing vehicles throughout south and east Austin during Friday night into Saturday morning.

Authorities urge anyone with information regarding this case to contact the Austin Police Department at 512-974-TIPS or submit tips anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program via their website or by calling 512-472-8477. A reward of up to $1,000 is available for information leading to an arrest.

This incident marks Austin’s 23rd homicide investigation of the year.
