Austin police investigate hit-and-run that killed pedestrian

On May 11, 2025, at around 4:59 a.m., the Austin Police Department (APD) responded to an incident involving a vehicle and three pedestrians in the 700 block of E 7th St. The vehicle involved fled the scene northbound on the N IH-35 frontage road. Two male pedestrians suffered minor injuries, while a female pedestrian sustained serious injuries. All three individuals were transported to a local hospital. The female pedestrian, identified as Erica Garza, was later pronounced deceased on May 16, 2025.

This case is being investigated as Austin’s 30th fatal crash of the year, with fatalities totaling 34 so far in 2025. On this date last year, there were also 34 deaths from fatal crashes. The investigation into this incident is ongoing and information regarding the fatality may be updated.

Authorities urge anyone with information about the crash to contact APD’s Vehicular Homicide unit at 512-974-8111. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program by visiting austincrimestoppers.org or calling 512-472-8477.
