The Austin Police Department (APD) has made an arrest in connection with the homicide investigation of Rex Johnson, who was found with gunshot wounds on March 31, 2025. The incident occurred in the 400 block of N. IH 35 at approximately 1:51 a.m. Johnson, identified as a Black male born on November 4, 1991, succumbed to his injuries on April 3.

On May 12, APD detectives arrested Kent Outten, aged 33, and charged him with murder for his alleged involvement in Johnson’s death. Detectives linked Outten to a subsequent shooting that took place on April 9 in the 1000 block of East Cesar Chavez after interviewing victims and reviewing surveillance footage.

“We extend our gratitude to the members of the Austin community who spoke with detectives and helped identify the suspect,” stated APD officials. They also acknowledged “the Texas Lone Star Fugitive Task Force for their critical assistance in the arrest of Outten.”

Initial investigations revealed that two Black male suspects approached Johnson while he was standing next to his blind friend using a cane. One suspect assaulted Johnson before the second suspect shot him. Both suspects fled east from the scene immediately after.

Authorities continue to seek information related to this case and encourage anyone with details to contact them at 512-974-TIPS or anonymously through Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program by visiting austincrimestoppers.org or calling 512-472-8477. A reward up to $1,000 may be available for information leading to an arrest.

This incident marks Austin’s twelfth homicide investigation of the year.
