The Austin Police Department (APD) has reported results from a recent initiative aimed at curbing impaired driving in Downtown Austin. Over the past month, the department has increased its traffic enforcement efforts, particularly on Friday and Saturday nights. Drug Recognition Expert Officers have been deployed to target drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

During this period, officers made 13 DWI arrests and tested 21 drivers for impairment who were not subsequently arrested. Additionally, they issued 51 warnings to drivers displaying unsafe or erratic behaviors and handed out 12 citations for various traffic violations related to impaired driving.

An APD spokesperson stated, “APD’s priority is to protect our community. Every impaired driver we arrest is one less potential danger on the road.” The spokesperson emphasized that their mission extends beyond enforcement: “It’s about sending the message that driving under the influence is not only illegal but reckless and unacceptable.”

The department encourages responsible decision-making and suggests alternatives such as ride-sharing services or designated drivers when consuming alcohol. They remind everyone with a clear message: “Don’t drink and drive.”
