Representative John Carter has announced that Emerson Black, a senior from Salado High School, has won the 2025 TX-31 Congressional Art Competition. Her artwork, titled “Leave Your Past Behind,” will be displayed in the United States Capitol for a year, where visitors from all over the world will have the opportunity to view it.
During the award ceremony at Texas State University-Round Rock, Emerson received several honors. These included a flag that had been flown over the U.S. Capitol, a TX-31 challenge coin, and an upcoming trip to Washington, D.C. to participate in a winners’ reception at the Capitol.
“Every year, I’m amazed by the outstanding artwork submitted by the talented students of Texas’ 31st District,” stated Representative Carter. “I’m proud to have Emerson’s incredible piece represent our community in the U.S. Capitol. Each time I walk to the House floor to vote, I pass by the winning artwork from our district—it serves as a daily reminder of the spirit and creativity of Central Texas. Congratulations to Emerson! I look forward to welcoming her to Washington, D.C. this summer to see her artwork on display.”
