On Thursday, May 1, 2025, the Austin Police Department (APD) and Austin Travis County Emergency Medical Services (ATCEMS) responded to a shooting call at the Shell station located at 2001 E. Riverside Drive. Upon arrival, officers found an unresponsive man with apparent gunshot wounds to his torso in the parking lot. The victim was identified as Marcos Valerio-Rodriguez and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Homicide detectives and Crime Scene Specialists processed the location and interviewed witnesses. It was determined that Valerio-Rodriguez, who was intoxicated, visited his girlfriend’s workplace, adjacent to the Shell station, where a verbal argument ensued. After the girlfriend returned to her workplace, Valerio-Rodriguez left, but soon returned and began banging on the door. A male bystander intervened, leading Valerio-Rodriguez to brandish a knife. In response, the bystander drew a gun and shot Valerio-Rodriguez. Multiple witnesses confirmed the sequence of events, and the bystander cooperated with the investigation.
As of now, no charges have been filed, and authorities consider the incident isolated. They assure the public that there is no ongoing threat to safety. Those with any information are encouraged to contact the Austin Police Department at 512-974-TIPS. Anonymous tips can be submitted via the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program at austincrimestoppers.org or by calling 512-472-8477.
