U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul of Texas recently appeared on CBS’ “Face the Nation” with Ed O’Keefe to discuss various international issues, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and President Trump’s planned visit to the Middle East.
Regarding ceasefire negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, McCaul described the situation as “very intense.” He noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin bombed Ukraine on Palm Sunday and has not made any concessions, whereas Ukrainian President Zelensky appears to be making several. McCaul emphasized that for peace talks to proceed, Putin must agree to a 30-day ceasefire. He stated, “We want peace, but not peace at any price,” drawing a parallel with historical appeasement scenarios.
On the subject of U.S. sanctions against Russia, McCaul indicated that if Putin does not agree to a ceasefire, sanctions are likely from both Congress and the White House. He credited a previous national security supplemental package with preventing Russian occupation of Ukraine. “It’s really up to Mr. Putin… as to how we proceed from here,” he remarked.
McCaul also addressed President Trump’s upcoming trip to the Middle East. Although details are sparse, he mentioned discussions about an economic alliance with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and other Arab nations. This alliance aims to strengthen economic ties and enhance regional security while countering China’s influence. The ultimate goal is a normalization agreement with Israel; however, this is complicated by recent hostilities involving Iran’s proxy Hamas in Gaza.
