On Monday, December 11, 2023, a fatal traffic accident occurred in the 2700 block of East Highway 71 WB in Austin, Texas. The incident involved a collision between a sedan and a CapMetro bus. The Austin Police Department (APD) responded to the scene at approximately 9:37 a.m.

According to the APD, all occupants of the sedan were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. Tragically, one of the passengers, identified as Susana Barnes, a white female born on February 4, 1973, succumbed to her injuries and passed away. The CapMetro bus driver also sustained injuries but they were non-life-threatening.

This incident marks Austin's 86th fatal crash of 2023, resulting in a total of 89 fatalities for the year. Comparatively, on the same date in 2022, there were 104 fatal crashes that resulted in 108 deaths. It is important to note that these statistics are subject to change as the investigation into the crash is still ongoing.

In light of this tragic event, the APD's Vehicular Homicide unit is urging anyone with information about the accident to come forward. The unit can be contacted at 512-974-8111. Alternatively, individuals can provide anonymous tips through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program by visiting austincrimestoppers.org or calling 512-472-8477.

As the investigation continues, the APD will gather more information to determine the cause of the crash and any potential contributing factors. The details surrounding this incident serve as a reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for drivers to exercise caution while on the road.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends of Susana Barnes during this difficult time.
