The Director of Austin HSEM, Ken Snipes, emphasized the significance of the upcoming total solar eclipse, stating, “Being in the path of totality for the solar eclipse is a special and once-in-a-lifetime event.” As Central Texas prepares for the celestial event, the City of Austin’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, along with its public safety partners, stand ready to assist and ensure the safety of residents and visitors.

During a total solar eclipse, the moon aligns between Earth and the sun, blocking the sun's rays and causing darkness to envelop the area within the path of totality. This rare phenomenon will traverse across North America, including several states in the U.S., with Texas being one of the fortunate locations. Cities like Johnson City, Fredericksburg, and Kerrville in Central Texas are expected to experience longer durations of total darkness, attracting a significant influx of travelers to witness the spectacle.

As the eclipse approaches, Austin HSEM has compiled essential information on safety, viewing tips, and events on their website. Moreover, educational programs hosted by the Austin Public Library and the Parks and Recreation Department will offer insights into the eclipse for all ages, with some locations providing eclipse glasses for safe viewing.

With the anticipation of increased visitors, the City advises individuals to plan ahead for potential disruptions in cell service and traffic congestion. Travelers are urged to refuel their vehicles early, work remotely if feasible, and stay informed about road closures and traffic updates through local news sources. Additionally, precautions while driving during the eclipse include avoiding distractions and refraining from wearing eclipse glasses behind the wheel.

To ensure safe viewing, eclipse glasses are recommended and can be obtained from various retailers and distribution points in the region. As the eclipse date draws nearer, securing proper eye protection is crucial for observing the event without risking eye damage. Residents and visitors are encouraged to visit ReadyCentralTexas.org/eclipse for a comprehensive list of locations offering eclipse glasses and hosting watch party events.

As Central Texas braces for the total solar eclipse, the City remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals during this remarkable astronomical occurrence.
