At Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), a diverse array of artistic expressions from local artists awaits travelers, offering a unique and enriching experience. From permanent installations to rotating exhibits, the airport's art scene captivates visitors with a blend of history, innovation, and community engagement.

One of the standout pieces in AUS's permanent collection is 'True Patriot' by Bruce Wolfe, a life-size sculpture honoring Barbara Jordan, the first African American woman elected to Congress from the South. This landmark piece celebrates Jordan's legacy and serves as a symbol of inspiration for travelers worldwide.

Another notable installation is 'Interimaginary' Departures by Janet Zweig, part of the Art in Public Places Collection. This interactive exhibit near Gate 14 allows guests to embark on a virtual journey to magical destinations, adding a touch of whimsy and imagination to the airport experience.

For history enthusiasts, the 'History of Bergstrom Air Force Base' display in Baggage Claim showcases artifacts and memorabilia from the former air force base that once occupied the airport property. This exhibit pays homage to the rich heritage of the Bergstrom Air Force Base and its impact on the Austin community.

'Green Austin' by Jimmy Jalapeeno offers a glimpse into the airport's history through a series of oil paintings displayed in the ticketing lobby. These iconic artworks, dating back to the era of the Mueller Airport, provide a visual narrative of AUS's evolution over the years.

Venturing outside the terminal, visitors can marvel at the impressive outdoor installations such as 'Meander Wings' by Marc Fornes and 'Uplifted Ground' by Michael Singer Studio. These towering creations, part of the Art in Public Places program, enhance the airport's landscape with their monumental presence.

In addition to its permanent and rotating exhibits, AUS actively collaborates with local organizations to bring special art initiatives to the terminal. 'The Heart Gallery,' a partnership with Partnerships for Children, raised awareness about fostering in Central Texas through a poignant display of children's photographs and artworks.

More recently, AUS partnered with the Blanton Museum of Art to showcase the creative talents of 4th graders from the Bastrop Independent School District in an exhibit titled 'Drawing the Blanton.' This collaborative project brought colorful and imaginative artwork to the terminal, highlighting the artistic prowess of young talents in the community.

As travelers journey through AUS, they are not just passing through an airport but embarking on a cultural exploration that celebrates local art, history, and community spirit.
