The Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center (ESB MACC) is gearing up to host its annual event, La Mujer: A Celebration of Women, on April 21, 2024. This celebration, now in its 13th year, is dedicated to honoring women and women-identifying individuals in Austin’s Mexican American and Latina/o/x/e community.
In a new move this year, ESB MACC has joined forces with The Cathedral gallery to provide a special space for the event. The collaboration aims to offer a platform where women can be acknowledged, empowered, and uplifted within the community.
Attendees can look forward to a range of activities and programs designed to promote mental health and wellness, showcase visual art exhibits, and provide a BIPOC-centered marketplace experience. The event will also feature workshops and keynote speakers, including sessions on Sound Healing, Rebozo (Shawl) making, and Somatic Writing.
Monica Ceniceros of the Cathedral, a women-owned gallery space in East Austin, will curate the visual art exhibits, adding a unique touch to the event. Additionally, outdoor activities will include an all-day Frida Friday ATX Artisan Marketplace, offering a platform for Latinx, BIPOC, and queer individuals to showcase their work.
As part of the festivities, attendees can engage in free outdoor children’s activities, participate in an "Open Pitch" session to share about their businesses, crafts, or organizations, and enjoy an "Open Mic" featuring emerging performers in music and poetry.
The event schedule will kick off at 1:00 p.m., with workshop sessions scheduled throughout the afternoon and final outdoor music performances and gallery viewing from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Food options will be available for purchase at the Frida Friday ATX market and from an on-site food truck.
