The Austin Parks and Recreation Department, along with the Austin Fire Department, Austin Fire Museum, and Save Austin's Cemeteries, have announced the upcoming Save Austin's Cemeteries Spring Tour at the historic Oakwood Cemetery. The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
According to the announcement, the Spring Tour will feature drop-in history tours from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visitors will also have the opportunity to see an Austin Fire Department truck on site from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. The event is free, open to the public, and offers ample free parking.
In addition to the tours and exhibits, attendees can explore a new digital exhibit by the Oakwood Cemetery Chapel titled "To Fight Fires." This exhibit delves into the history of the Austin Fire Department from the early 1800s to the present day.
The Oakwood Cemetery and Chapel hold significant historical value as a place where visitors can pay homage to those buried there and learn about Austin's early days. Established in 1839, the Oakwood Cemetery is a City of Austin Historic Landmark, a Historic Texas Cemetery, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
