The City of Austin's Homeless Strategy Office (HSO) has announced a new initiative aimed at enhancing resources for individuals at risk of homelessness through digital innovation and homeless diversion assistance. The initiative involves issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) to qualified service providers, with nearly $2 million in funds earmarked for the project.

According to David Gray, City of Austin Homeless Strategy Officer, the goal of the initiative is to provide individuals and families with critical information and resources that can help them avoid homelessness. Gray emphasized the importance of equipping individuals with the tools they need to achieve long-term stability and independence, stating, "Providing individuals and families with critical information at their fingertips might be the difference between remaining housed or slipping into homelessness."

The selected service provider will be tasked with providing online and phone-based resources to help individuals resolve their housing crisis, as well as offering one-time financial assistance and counseling to prevent long-term homelessness. The initiative aims to reduce barriers for people at risk or experiencing homelessness, making essential information more accessible within Austin's city limits.

The total funding available for this initiative is $1,917,060, with the agreement between HSO and the selected service provider expected to begin on August 1, 2024, and extend through September 30, 2026. Applications for the RFP are now open, with proposals due in the City of Austin's PartnerGrants Database by May 22.

The City of Austin's initiative represents a proactive step towards addressing homelessness through digital innovation and personalized support, with the ultimate goal of providing individuals and families with the resources they need to achieve housing stability.
