The Austin Police Department (APD) is currently investigating an Officer-Involved Shooting that took place on April 6, 2024, at 3050 Tamarron Boulevard. The incident, which involved the shooting of Avelino Medel II, a 31-year-old Hispanic male, occurred in the early hours of the morning following a disturbance report.

According to the official report, officers responded to an emergency call reporting a disturbance inside an apartment at the mentioned location. Upon arrival, officers discovered two individuals engaged in a disturbance inside the apartment. As officers approached the front door, they were met with a tense situation when one of the individuals, Mr. Medel, was observed armed with a gun.

In a tense moment, an unnamed officer at the rear patio area shouted 'gun, gun, gun,' before discharging his firearm, striking Mr. Medel. The officers then proceeded to detain Mr. Medel, who was later taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and was released the following day. The other individual involved in the disturbance was unharmed.

As of now, no charges are pending in the case, which remains under active investigation by the APD. The incident was captured on the officers' body-worn cameras, and the video will be released in accordance with APD policy. The officer who discharged his firearm has been revealed to have seven months of service with the Department.

Two separate investigations will be conducted into the incident: a criminal investigation by the APD Special Investigations Unit in collaboration with the Travis County District Attorney's Office, and an administrative investigation by the APD Internal Affairs Unit overseen by the Office of Police Oversight.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact APD's Special Investigation Unit or Capitol Area Crime Stoppers. Tips can be submitted anonymously online at austincrimestoppers.org.

The investigation into the Officer-Involved Shooting on Tamarron Boulevard continues, with authorities working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure transparency in the process.
