Gabriel Arellano, a father, entrepreneur, educator, advocate, and member of the Deaf community, has been recognized as Austin's newest Net-Zero Hero. Arellano's dedication to elevating Sign Languages through STEM education and sustainability has made a significant impact in the community.

Arellano's journey began with a deep-rooted inspiration drawn from his upbringing and experiences. He shared, "I grew up in New Mexico surrounded by Native Americans, Pueblos, Mexicans, and other peoples who have practiced traditional Indigenous knowledge for millennia. Sustainable practices were carried out daily." This early exposure to sustainable practices and endangered species fueled his passion for environmental conservation and language preservation.

In 2017, Arellano, along with his son, founded STEMSign, an open education school that integrates American Sign Language and English into STEM education. Through STEMS, Arellano aims to provide inclusive and hands-on learning opportunities for underrepresented communities. He emphasized the importance of PLAY WELL, SYNERGIZE, and ELEVATE as guiding principles for STEMS' educational approach.

Reflecting on the impact of his work, Arellano expressed, "When I see someone practice Sign Language, I see their knowledge and spirit get brighter. Sign Languages are visual, making it easy to synergize our mindsets to see and know that we are all 'one' together. They are languages of love and liberation."

Despite the rewarding aspects of his journey, Arellano acknowledged the challenges posed by the climate crisis and the exploitation of Sign Languages for financial gain. He highlighted the need to address language deprivation among Deaf children and emphasized the importance of closing the exposure gap in Sign Language learning for marginalized communities.

As a Heritage Signer, Arellano shared insights into his cultural and linguistic background, emphasizing the significance of Sign Languages in preserving heritage and ancestry. Through his work with organizations, Arellano advocates for creating more inclusive experiences for community members who sign, promoting equity and zero barriers in STEM fields.

Arellano's advice to others includes engaging with sustainability values, practicing Land Back to honor traditional Indigenous knowledge, and dedicating time to learn and practice Sign Languages. His message resonates with a call to action for environmental stewardship and cultural preservation.

In closing, Arellano encouraged individuals to experience life beyond screens, connect with nature, and support sustainability initiatives. His commitment to environmental justice, language preservation, and inclusive education exemplifies the essence of a Net-Zero Hero.
