Austin police investigate fatal stabbing on downtown's Sixth Street

On December 14, 2024, the Austin Police Department (APD) was informed by the Kyle Police Department about a male victim who had been taken to a Hays County Hospital with stab wounds. The incident occurred at approximately 2:35 a.m. A friend of the victim drove him to the hospital after an altercation on 6th Street. At 3:02 a.m., Kyle PD reported back that the victim had died.

The deceased has been identified as Leonard Akens, a Black male born on September 21, 2005. Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Specialists from APD responded to process the scene and interview witnesses. The investigation revealed that Akens was in the 100 block of 6th Street when his group got into an altercation with another group, which escalated and resulted in him being stabbed.

Persons of interest have been identified, but the investigation is still ongoing. The public is urged to provide any information related to this case by contacting the Austin Police Department at 512-974-TIPS. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program via their website or by calling 512-472-8477. A reward of up to $1,000 may be available for information leading to an arrest.

This incident marks Austin's 67th homicide of the year.
