With freezing weather conditions hitting the city, several Parks and Recreation facilities in Austin are being affected. Barton Springs Pool (BSP) will be closing early on Sunday, January 14th at 6:00 PM. However, starting on Monday, January 15th, and Tuesday, January 16th, it will reopen as a "swim at your own risk" facility from 11:00 AM until closing time.

Regarding golf courses, all City of Austin golf courses, except for Grey Rock Golf Course, will be closing on Sunday, January 14th, and will potentially remain closed until Tuesday, January 16th. The closure is necessary to protect the turf and irrigation equipment from the freezing temperatures. Golf operations may resume earlier if the temperatures rise above freezing for an extended period of time.

The Parks and Recreation Department (PARD) is taking measures to prepare for the cold weather. Outdoor plumbing and fixtures are being winterized and will remain offline until it is safe for them to be operational again. PARD is also conducting regular checks for any leaks or damage in the facilities before bringing them back to normal operating hours.

According to the city officials, all PARD operations are subject to change depending on the severity of the weather conditions. Facilities will be reopened as soon as temperatures allow. To stay updated on the latest information, residents are advised to visit austintexas.gov/parkclosures.

In response to the closures, some residents have expressed disappointment. One resident, who regularly swims at Barton Springs Pool, shared their frustration, saying, "It's unfortunate that the pool has to close during freezing temperatures. I understand the need for safety, but it's disappointing for those of us who rely on it for our daily exercise."

Despite the inconvenience, the closures are necessary to ensure the safety and preservation of the facilities. As one city official pointed out, "Closing the golf courses and pools is a precautionary measure to protect the infrastructure from damage caused by freezing temperatures. It is important to prioritize their preservation to provide a better experience for visitors in the long run."

As the city continues to brace for the cold weather, residents are urged to follow updates from the Parks and Recreation Department and take necessary precautions to stay safe during the freezing conditions.
