The Austin Police Department (APD) has made an arrest in a case involving a man suspected of impersonating a police officer. The suspect, identified as Sean Michael MacDonald, a 35-year-old white male from Pflugerville, was taken into custody on January 22, 2024, on charges of False Identification as a Peace Officer.
The investigation began on January 16, 2024, when photos of a person wearing an Austin Police Department uniform surfaced. The individual in the photos was not recognized as a current or former APD officer. The case was then assigned to the Austin Police Department Aggravated Assault Unit, with assistance from the Austin Police Department Violent Crimes Task Force.
According to APD, anyone who has had contact with MacDonald while he represented himself as an Austin Police Officer is urged to come forward. This includes instances where he claimed to be a police officer and instances where he took actions as if he were an Austin Police Officer.
In a statement, APD stated, "The Austin Police Department Aggravated Assault Unit is asking for anyone who has had contact with MacDonald while representing himself as an Austin Police Officer to contact the Austin Police Department."
APD also provided information on how to report any relevant information. Individuals can submit tips anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program by visiting austincrimestoppers.org or calling 512-472-8477.
The arrest of Sean Michael MacDonald serves as a reminder of the importance of being cautious and vigilant when interacting with individuals who claim to be law enforcement officers. Impersonating a police officer is a serious offense that undermines public trust and can potentially put innocent individuals at risk.
As the investigation into this case continues, the Austin Police Department remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of the community.
