The Aquatic Division of the Parks and Recreation Department is gearing up for the upcoming swim season. With the goal of fully staffing City pools during the summer months, the department is in need of approximately 850 lifeguards. Currently, there are 235 lifeguards on staff, leaving hundreds of positions still open. The demand for these jobs is high, so interested individuals are encouraged to apply promptly.

According to the Parks and Recreation Department, entry-level lifeguard positions offer a competitive wage of $20.80 per hour. This hourly rate provides a promising opportunity for individuals looking to earn a substantial income during the summer season.

In preparation for the swim season, lifeguard training is taking place year-round. Prospective lifeguards have the chance to obtain their lifeguard certification or recertification during the winter. One of the advantages of participating in winter training is the availability of smaller class sizes in a heated pool, ensuring a comfortable learning environment for all participants. However, it is essential to note that before enrolling in the training program, all candidates must complete the necessary job application and hiring paperwork.

To facilitate planning, interested individuals can consult the Lifeguard Certification Schedule and Lifeguard Renewal Class Dates provided by the Parks and Recreation Department. These resources will help candidates determine the most suitable time to pursue their certification or recertification.

Aside from the attractive hourly wage, lifeguards in Austin also enjoy additional benefits. In addition to the free training provided, lifeguards are also provided with a free uniform. Furthermore, starting at the age of 15, individuals are eligible to begin their lifeguard training and apply for positions. There is no age limit, meaning that individuals of all ages are encouraged to explore the rewarding opportunity of becoming a lifeguard.

As the Parks and Recreation Department ramps up its efforts to hire and train lifeguards, the importance of ensuring public safety at City pools cannot be overstated. In the words of the department spokesperson, "The role of lifeguards is crucial in maintaining a safe swimming environment for all patrons. We are actively seeking dedicated individuals who are passionate about water safety and eager to make a positive impact in our community."
