The Office of Sustainability in Austin has released its annual highlights for 2023, showcasing the progress made in building a sustainable and resilient future for the city and its neighboring counties. One of the key achievements highlighted is the collaborative approach taken to address environmental and sustainability challenges.

Recognizing the interconnectedness of these challenges, the Office of Sustainability has worked on forging partnerships and initiatives that extend beyond the boundaries of Austin. This regional collaboration aims to increase effectiveness and collective strength in addressing the challenges of a changing climate. As stated by the office, "We are collaborating regionally — forging partnerships and initiatives that extend beyond the boundaries of Austin. This approach aims to foster cooperation and coordination among neighboring communities to increase our effectiveness and collective strength in addressing the challenges of a changing climate."

One of the initiatives undertaken in 2023 was the engagement of community members in regional food planning work. The office organized over 40 events, reaching out to more than 2,000 community members. The feedback and comments received during these events are shaping the upcoming food plan for Austin/Travis County. This food plan will be the first of its kind for the area and will address key areas of the food system, such as food waste, production, processing, and access. According to the office, "Through the food plan, we aim to set clear goals and strategies to move toward a more equitable, sustainable, and resilient food system and provide a coordinating structure for all food-related initiatives."

To support these efforts, the City of Austin secured a $1 million grant through the EPA's Climate Pollution Reduction Grants program. The grant has been used to hire staff and collaborate with partners not only within Austin but also across the Austin Metropolitan Statistical Area, including Travis, Hays, Williamson, Bastrop, and Caldwell counties. This partnership is crucial in addressing greenhouse gas emissions, as the issue extends beyond the city limits. As mentioned by the office, "We know that reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a challenge extending beyond Austin’s city limits."

To ensure that the planning process is inclusive and representative of community voices, a community and stakeholder advisory group was formed. This group plays a vital role in providing input and ensuring that diverse perspectives are considered. The immediate focus for 2024 is the development of a regional Priority Climate Action Plan, which will identify high-priority actions to lower emissions at a regional level. The office aims to implement these priorities and secure future grants to extend the benefits of collaborative efforts across the region. The office states, "Identified priorities will be the focus of future grant applications, ensuring implementation and allowing the benefits of our collaborative efforts to be felt across the region."

Overall, the projects carried out by the Office of Sustainability in 2023 demonstrate a commitment to building a sustainable and resilient future not only for Austin but also for Travis County and the neighboring counties within the Austin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The office encourages collaboration and aims to create a just, equitable, and environmentally responsible community that serves as a model for others to follow.
