The Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center (ESB MACC) will host its 17th annual ¡Viva México! celebration outside the Oswaldo A.B. Cantu/Pan American Recreation Center on Saturday, September 14, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. This outdoor event includes live mariachi music and folkloric dance performances, family art activities, and a vendor market. The event is alcohol-free.
Claudia Talamantez of Univision will serve as the evening's emcee, and Mexican Consul Humberto Hernández Haddad will deliver the Grito de Independencia. Frida Friday ATX will introduce guests to vendors selling original artwork, clothing, jewelry, and gifts supporting women and BIPOC artists. The ESB MACC education team will provide free children's activities including crafts.
A free shuttle bus service will operate from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., transporting attendees between Rudy Méndez Recreation Center and Fiesta Gardens to the Pan American Recreation Center. Visitors can park in the neighborhood around Rudy Méndez Recreation Center and use the shuttle service to reach the event venue. Parking is also available in the neighborhood around Pan American Recreation Center.
¡Viva México! is an Austin tradition that honors both Mexico's Independence Day and the diverse cultural traditions of Austin's Mexican, Mexican-American, Latina/o/x, Chicana/o/x, and Tejana/o/x communities. Despite ESB MACC being closed for Phase 2 renovations, it remains important to continue this annual celebration that brings together Austin's Latino community.
