The Emma S. Barrientos Mexican-American Cultural Center (ESB MACC) will host its 17th annual ¡Viva México! celebration outside the Oswaldo A.B. Cantu/Pan American Recreation Center, located at 2100 East 3rd St., on Saturday, September 14 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event includes live mariachi music and folkloric dance performances, family-friendly art activities, and a vendor market. This is an alcohol-free event.
Master of Ceremonies Claudia Talamantez from Univision will lead the evening’s entertainment, and Mexican Consul Humberto Hernández Haddad will give the Grito de Independencia. A marketplace organized by Frida Friday ATX will feature vendors selling original artwork, clothes, jewelry, and gifts that support women and BIPOC local artists. The ESB MACC Education team will provide free children's activities including hands-on crafts.
A free shuttle bus service will operate from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., transporting attendees between Rudy Mendez Recreation Center and the Pan American Recreation Center. Guests may park in the neighborhood around Rudy Mendez Recreation Center and use the shuttle service or find limited parking around the Pan Am Recreation Center.
¡Viva México! is an Austin tradition that honors Mexico’s Independence Day as well as the diverse cultural traditions of Austin’s Mexican, Mexican-American, Latino, Chicano, and Tejano community. Despite Phase 2 renovations at ESB MACC necessitating a temporary closure, this annual celebration continues to bring together East Austin's Latino (Latina/e/x) community.
