The Austin Police Department (APD) is actively investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place on November 7, 2024, at 9501 N FM 620. The incident began when a Bee Cave Police Department officer attempted to stop an orange Ford Ranger truck for speeding on Hwy. 71. The vehicle fled, prompting the officer to alert APD.
At approximately 3:38 a.m., Zachary Labrie was captured on a Ring doorbell camera entering an apartment complex parking lot in the truck, armed with a shotgun. He forced entry into an apartment and later stole two vehicles from separate locations.
APD's Violent Crimes Task Force located Labrie near the initial scene of the incident. Officers identified themselves and instructed him to surrender. Labrie fled on foot and allegedly pointed a handgun at officers, leading them to discharge their weapons. Labrie was pronounced dead shortly after life-saving measures were attempted.
The investigation involves both criminal and administrative inquiries by APD and oversight by the Office of Police Oversight (OPO). The Travis County District Attorney's Office is also involved in reviewing materials related to the case.
"Transparency and accountability are key elements needed to serve and build relationships within the Austin community," stated APD officials regarding their approach to handling this critical incident.
Body-worn camera footage from the officers involved has been released but redacted according to state law requirements. This footage is available on APD's YouTube channel, though it contains graphic content.
