The Austin-Travis County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) was activated early Monday morning in response to a winter storm forecasted by the National Weather Service. The storm warning for Central Texas is effective from 6:00 p.m. on January 20 until 6:00 p.m. on January 21.
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson and Travis County Judge Andy Brown addressed the public at a press conference, discussing preparations and responses to the impending weather conditions. Mayor Watson assured residents that the city is prepared, stating, “We, as a City, are prepared for winter weather by making sure our utilities are ready for severe weather, providing warming centers and shelter for those who need it.”
Judge Brown emphasized safety precautions during cold temperatures, advising residents to stay warm and check on vulnerable individuals. “We want everyone to be prepared to safely keep your house warm, travel responsibly,” he said.
The City has announced that Cold Weather Shelters will operate continuously through Wednesday morning. Additionally, three Austin Public Library branches have been opened as Warming Centers from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Austin Energy is actively monitoring grid conditions and urges customers to report outages via their website or by phone. The Transportation and Public Works department is treating roads against ice but advises drivers to remain cautious.
CapMetro services will end at 9:00 p.m. on January 20 with potential impacts continuing into Tuesday; updates will be provided on their website.
Public safety agencies have responded to several cold-related incidents since Sunday, including one structure fire possibly linked to the weather.
Residents are encouraged to sign up for emergency alerts through Warn Central Texas and only use 911 for life-threatening emergencies. Other inquiries should be directed to 311 or the designated city contact number.
