U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul has issued a statement regarding the release of Marc Fogel from Russia. Fogel's return to the United States follows efforts by McCaul, who has been advocating for his release.
"I'm thrilled to hear Marc is on his way to be reunited with his family on American soil," said McCaul. He noted that he had spent years urging the Biden administration to classify Fogel as "wrongfully detained" and to work towards his release. While expressing relief over Fogel's release, McCaul credited former President Trump's team for their immediate actions in securing Fogel's return. "Putin clearly understands President Trump means business," he stated, adding that this represents strong American leadership.
McCaul has consistently pushed for action in Fogel's case. In early 2023, he wrote to Secretary Blinken, calling for the designation of Fogel's situation as wrongful detainment by the Biden administration. Furthermore, he introduced and successfully passed a resolution supporting Fogel and highlighting what he described as a politicized and excessive sentence.
