U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul (R-Texas), who serves as chairman emeritus of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, issued a statement today marking the three-year anniversary of the war in Ukraine.
McCaul began by recalling the events that unfolded three years ago when Russian President Vladimir Putin initiated military action in Ukraine. He stated, "Three years ago today, Putin sent his army into Ukraine, shattering peace in Europe and threatening global stability." He further noted the support Russia received from China, Iran, and North Korea, saying these countries "quickly came to his aid — bolstering Russia’s defense industrial base and sending thousands of troops to fight and kill the Ukrainian people."
The congressman expressed agreement with former President Trump regarding his stance on this conflict. "I agree with President Trump that this would never have happened had he been in office," McCaul remarked. He attributed the absence of such conflicts during Trump's first term to what he described as Trump's projection of "peace through strength."
Reflecting on past U.S. administrations' actions, McCaul criticized both the Obama and Biden administrations for not confronting Putin earlier. "All the pain and bloodshed in Europe could have been prevented if Democrats...had stood up to Putin sooner," he asserted.
As discussions continue to seek resolution, McCaul urged those involved to ensure accountability for Russia's actions: "President Trump has answered the call to help put an end to the fighting...I urge them to ensure the agreement holds the Kremlin accountable for its crimes." He emphasized that lasting peace requires preventing any future attempts by Putin to expand Russia's influence over Ukraine.
