Property owners in Williamson County are losing out on more than $6 million in exemptions

Ward

More than $6 million in tax savings are being left unclaimed by Williamson County property owners, according to the Williamson Central Appraisal District.

“Almost daily, the district encounters property owners who have gone years without the benefit of a homestead exemption,” WCAD Chief Appraiser Alvin Lankford told KXAN. “Add in the property owners who were unaware that they could also qualify for an over-65 or disabled person exemption, and the amount of savings lost is staggering.”

Property owners can still obtain unclaimed savings related to the homestead exemption. They can file for a late homestead exemption up to two years after the date which the taxes on the homestead became delinquent.

In addition to the general homestead exemption and age 65 or older, or disabled person exemption, Texas offers many other types of exemptions to help reduce property taxes. This includes exemptions for partially and fully disabled veterans or surviving spouses, surviving spouses of military service members killed in action, and surviving spouses of first responders killed on duty.
