The Austin Police Department (APD) has released a statement regarding the incident that occurred on Sixth Street over the weekend. The incident, which took place on Saturday, December 16th, was unfortunately not preventable, but the APD responded to the situation promptly.

According to the APD, they were notified about the incident at 11:52 p.m. and the first officer arrived on the scene within a minute of the notification. The APD takes all crimes that occur in the city seriously and is continuously looking for ways to make the community safe for all.

While the specific updates regarding the Safer Sixth Street Initiative will need to be handled by the Development Services Department (DSD), the APD acknowledges the importance of tackling the goals mentioned in the initiative to improve safety in the area. The Safer Sixth Street Initiative is an interdepartmental collaboration that aims to enhance safety and establish operating standards in the nightlife district.

In addition to the Safer Sixth Street Initiative, the APD is actively working on other efforts to keep Sixth Street safe. This includes obtaining more light trailers to enhance safety and visibility in areas of concern, working with stakeholders on a potential environmental redesign for areas of Brazos Street, and providing more officers to the area through the current DTAC Initiative Shift.

The APD also encourages the public to remain vigilant and take certain precautions when going out. They advise individuals to always stay in a group and have a safe meeting location in case they get separated, be aware of their exit plan at establishments, never leave their drink unattended or take anything from a stranger, and make a plan to get home safely.

As for the ongoing investigation into the Officer Involved Shooting that occurred on the same night, the APD states that information related to the incident will be released within ten business days, in accordance with APD policy.

The APD's prompt response to the incident on Sixth Street highlights their commitment to ensuring the safety of the community. While the incident itself was unfortunate, the APD's efforts to improve safety and their collaboration with other departments demonstrate their dedication to creating a safer nightlife district.
