On March 31, 2025, at 1:51 a.m., a shooting incident was reported to the Austin 9-1-1. Officers from the Austin Police Department (APD) responded to the scene in the 400 block of N. IH 35. They found an unresponsive male, later identified as Rex Johnson, who had apparent gunshot wounds. Johnson was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on April 3, at 1:15 p.m.
The APD's Aggravated Assault Detectives and Crime Scene Specialists arrived at the location to process the scene and gather information from witnesses. Preliminary findings indicated that Johnson was standing beside his blind friend when two Black male suspects approached. One suspect allegedly assaulted Johnson, causing him to fall, while the other suspect shot him. The suspects immediately fled east from the intersection following the incident.
Authorities are requesting assistance from the public to identify the assailants. People with information are urged to contact the Austin Police Department at 512-974-TIPS. Anonymous tips can be submitted through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program at austincrimestoppers.org or by calling 512-472-8477. A reward of up to $1,000 may be available for information leading to an arrest.
The case is being investigated as Austin's 12th homicide of 2025.
