On December 7, 2023, tragedy struck on the 2400 block of South Capitol of Texas Highway as a single vehicle crash resulted in the death of Byron Gutierrez-Rodriguez. The Austin Police Department (APD) responded to the scene at approximately 12:40 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers discovered that Gutierrez-Rodriguez, a white male born on May 19, 2002, had tragically lost his life. The driver of the vehicle and another passenger were assessed by the Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Service (ATCEMS), but both declined transportation to a hospital.
This incident marks Austin's 83rd fatal crash and brings the total number of fatalities for the year to 86. A comparison to the same date in 2022 reveals a decrease in the number of fatal crashes, with 104 occurring and 108 lives lost.
The investigation into this crash is still ongoing, and the APD's Vehicular Homicide unit is actively seeking any information that may help shed light on the circumstances surrounding the incident.
