The Austin Police Department (APD) has made a significant breakthrough in a homicide investigation that has been ongoing for several months. According to an update released by the APD, detectives have successfully identified Melcolm Lee as the prime suspect in the murder of Jehu Patrick Flores.
"After meticulous investigation, we have gathered enough evidence to issue a warrant for First-Degree Murder against Melcolm Lee," stated an APD spokesperson. The warrant was issued on December 12, 2023, as the investigation progressed and pointed towards Lee's involvement in the crime.
The arrest of Lee took place on December 20, 2023, with the assistance of the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force and the United States Marshals Service. Lee was apprehended at Mable Davis Park on Parker Ln, where he attempted to escape from the pursuing officers. However, law enforcement officials swiftly captured him and subsequently booked him into the Travis County jail.
The original investigation began on Monday, November 27, 2023, after the APD Homicide Unit received multiple tips regarding a murder that had taken place months earlier at the West Bouldin Creek Greenbelt in the 1100 block of South 6th Street. These tips included information about the location of the victim's burial within the Greenbelt.
Acting on the information provided, detectives and Crime Scene Specialists, along with a search and rescue K9, conducted a thorough search of the area on November 29, 2023. During the search, skeletal remains were discovered, consistent with the details provided by the tipsters. The remains were collected by the Travis County Medical Examiner's office, with the assistance of the Texas State Anthropology Department, for further examination and identification.
An autopsy performed by the Travis County Medical Examiner's office confirmed that the victim, Jehu Patrick Flores, had died as a result of a homicide. The exact cause of death has not been disclosed as the investigation is still ongoing.
The APD is urging anyone with additional information regarding this case to come forward. They can contact APD's Homicide Unit at 512-974-TIPS or email homicide.apd@austintexas.gov. This tragic incident marks Austin's 65th homicide of 2023, highlighting the ongoing need for comprehensive efforts to address violence within the community. The successful identification and arrest of Melcolm Lee serve as a testament to the dedication and professionalism of the APD in their pursuit of justice.
