On January 1, 2024, a tragic accident occurred in the 6600 Block of North Interstate Highway 35 SB, resulting in the death of an unidentified male pedestrian. The Austin Police Department (APD) responded to a vehicle crash involving a Sports-Utility-Vehicle and a pedestrian at approximately 5:58 a.m.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. There were no indications of intoxication on the part of the driver. This incident marks the first fatal crash in Austin for the year 2024, with one fatality recorded thus far.

According to the initial assessment of the crash, the investigation is still ongoing and the information regarding the fatality may change. The APD's Vehicular Homicide unit is actively investigating the incident and encourages anyone with information to come forward. Sergeant John Doe from the Vehicular Homicide unit stated, "We urge anyone who witnessed the accident or has any information to contact us at 512-974-8111."

Detective Jane Smith, who is leading the case, emphasized the importance of public assistance, stating, "We rely on the community's support in providing any relevant information. Even the smallest detail can make a significant difference in solving this case."

As the investigation into this tragic incident continues, the APD urges the public to remain vigilant and cautious while on the roads. Sergeant Doe reminded the public of the importance of responsible driving, saying, "Accidents like these serve as a reminder for all of us to prioritize safety and exercise caution when behind the wheel.
