The City of Austin has introduced its Open Government Action Plan for 2024-2028, crafted in partnership with community-based organizations, academic institutions, city staff, and the Open Government Partnership (OGP). This initiative is aimed at improving transparency, collaboration, and public engagement to enhance trust and accountability within the community.
As an OGP member, Austin has worked alongside residents, community leaders, and government stakeholders to create a vision for a more open and accessible government. The plan outlines strategies that focus on innovation, inclusivity, and digital transformation to address key challenges.
The plan employs strategic foresight methods such as trend analysis and scenario planning to foresee risks and opportunities. It addresses equity-centered solutions in areas like climate change, economic resilience, and AI accountability. This approach aims to develop a mindset geared towards future challenges while ensuring adaptable policymaking during uncertain times.
The Action Plan includes commitments such as:
- "AI accountability: Creating a framework to address bias, errors, and misuse in government AI tools with processes for evaluation, reporting, and resolution."
- "Climate adaptation: Developing a scalable process to adapt City operations to climate change, starting with a pilot program in partnership with Texas State University."
- "Economic resilience: Tackling economic inequality in Eastern Crescent neighborhoods through a cross-departmental team to support small businesses and guide policy through data."
These commitments are aligned with the city's vision of making Austin thriving, equitable, and connected. They also introduce an innovative practice involving student leaders from Austin Community College’s Center for Government and Civic Service who will monitor the implementation of these commitments.
Austin's involvement with the OGP enhances its capacity to learn from global cities and governments by sharing challenges and successes. This ensures that Austin's work reflects international best practices while maintaining local relevance.
Residents are encouraged to engage with the full Open Government Action Plan 2024-2028. Community participation is essential as the city moves toward greater openness and transparency.
