The Austin City Council is inviting applications from qualified individuals to join the Municipal Civil Service Commission. The commission consists of five members, and applications are being accepted for an unexpired term ending in May 2027, with the possibility of consideration for a full three-year term extending through May 2028.

The commitment required for this role typically involves about 20 hours per month. The commission holds hearings twice a month, each lasting a full business day, with additional meetings scheduled as necessary. These positions are voluntary.

Applications will remain open until all positions are filled.

The Municipal Civil Service Commission was established following a vote by Austin residents in November 2012 to create a municipal civil service system for most city employees not covered by state civil service law. The commission was formed through an amendment to the City Charter and is responsible for recommending rules to the council and serving as the ruling body on appeals related to disciplinary actions involving City of Austin employees.

The commission makes final, binding decisions on appeals concerning disciplinary probation, suspension, demotion, discharge, or denial of promotion. It also recommends rule modifications if proposed by the MCS Director.

Interested candidates can apply online via the City of Austin Boards and Commissions application portal at https://austintexas.granicus.com/boards/forms/385/apply. Applications will be reviewed and selected candidates may be invited for interviews during a meeting of the Austin City Council Audit & Finance Committee.
