Traffic Fatality in the 3800 block of E SH 71 WB

Austin, TX - A tragic traffic accident occurred on Sunday, December 17, 2023, in the 3800 block of E SH 71 WB, resulting in the death of Joan M Cooper, a 76-year-old white female. According to the Austin Police Department (APD), the incident involved a collision between a sedan and a pick-up truck.

Preliminary investigations suggest that both vehicles were traveling west on SH 71, approaching the 130 Toll Road. The pick-up truck was in the left lane, while the sedan was in either the center or right lane. For reasons yet unknown, the sedan made a left turn in front of the truck, resulting in a collision with the driver's door.

Unfortunately, the driver of the sedan, Joan M Cooper, sustained severe injuries and was immediately transported to a local hospital. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries on January 7, 2024.

This incident marks the 90th fatal crash in Austin for the year 2023, with a total of 94 fatalities. In comparison, on the same date in 2022, there were 110 fatal crashes resulting in 115 deaths. These statistics highlight the ongoing need for improved road safety measures in the city.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the crash, and anyone with information is urged to contact APD's Vehicular Homicide unit at 512-974-8111.
