The City of Austin, Parks and Recreation Department, Capital Delivery Services Department, and the Barton Springs Conservancy are coming together to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Barton Springs Bathhouse Rehabilitation project. The ceremony will take place on February 22 at 10 a.m. at 2131 William Barton Dr. This project aims to restore and improve the historic Barton Springs Bathhouse, which was built in 1947 and is a State Antiquities Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The rehabilitation work will involve various major elements, including the replacement of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and drainage systems. Structural improvements will also be made to meet code requirements, and there will be enhancements to the pool entry and exit areas, public spaces, landscaping, and parking. Additionally, a fire truck access lane will be constructed for safety purposes, and overall improvements will be made to ensure compliance with Texas Accessibility Standards.

One of the highlights of the project is the restoration of the historical rotunda, which will serve as the main entry to the bathhouse. The Beverly Sheffield Education Center will also undergo a redesign, featuring an educational exhibit that focuses on the importance of protecting water and preserving the salamander habitat in Barton Springs.

The rehabilitation work will commence on February 15, 2024, and is expected to be substantially completed by spring 2025. While the bathhouse is under construction, temporary restroom and shower facilities will be provided nearby. However, Barton Springs Pool will remain open to swimmers during the rehabilitation process, with a temporary pool entrance set up on the north side near the bathhouse.

To ensure the safety of construction activities, there will be limited one-way traffic on William Barton Drive near the bathhouse. Only emergency vehicles, construction deliveries, and vehicles needing accessible parking will be allowed in this area. Public parking will not be available, except for designated accessible parking spaces in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and Texas Accessibility Standards.

The funding for this rehabilitation project comes from various sources, including the Historic Preservation Fund, the 2012 Bond Program, Zilker Parking Fees, One-time City Council Funding, and significant contributions from the Barton Springs Conservancy. The City's Watershed Protection Department and Austin Water Department have also provided additional support.

The Barton Springs Bathhouse is an iconic landmark in Austin and serves as an important cultural and historical site. The rehabilitation project aims to preserve the heritage of Barton Springs while improving the facility for the enjoyment of visitors and the community.

As the project progresses, updates and further information can be found on the Barton Springs Bathhouse Rehabilitation Project website. This project is another example of the City's commitment to preserving its historical sites and providing accessible and enjoyable experiences for residents and tourists alike.
