A tragic traffic accident occurred on Monday, February 12, 2024, in the 200 block of US 183 Toll Road SB, resulting in the death of a young boy. The incident involved a sedan and a hatchback, and the Austin Police Department (APD) responded to the scene at around 7:20 p.m.

According to the initial assessment, the sedan was stopped in the middle lane with its hazard lights on when the hatchback collided with the rear of the vehicle. Two juvenile passengers were in the sedan at the time of the crash. Unfortunately, one of the passengers, identified as DeErick Williams II, a 10-year-old Black male, sustained life-threatening injuries and later succumbed to them.

The driver of the sedan was unharmed and showed no signs of impairment. On the other hand, the driver of the hatchback suffered minor injuries but remained at the scene and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

This incident marks the sixth fatal crash in Austin for the year 2024, resulting in a total of six fatalities. Comparatively, on the same date in 2023, there were 11 fatal crashes that led to 11 deaths.

It is important to note that the investigation into this fatal crash is still ongoing, and the information regarding the incident may change as more details emerge. The APD's Vehicular Homicide unit is leading the investigation, and they are urging anyone with information to come forward.
