On Tuesday, February 13, 2024, tragedy struck in the 12200 block of North Mopac Expressway when a sedan crashed into the emergency room waiting area of the North Austin Medical Center. The driver of the vehicle, Michell Holloway, tragically lost her life in the incident. Three adults and two juveniles who were in the waiting room at the time sustained injuries and were taken to different hospitals for treatment. While some of their injuries were serious, they were thankfully not life-threatening.
According to the Austin Police Department (APD), there is currently no indication that this was an intentional act or the result of a medical episode experienced by the driver. The investigation into the circumstances of the crash is still in its early stages, and the information may change as more details emerge.
"This investigation is in its early and preliminary stages. However, there is no indication at this time that this was an intentional act, nor does it indicate that the driver suffered from a medical episode," stated the APD.
This incident marks Austin's seventh fatal crash of 2024, resulting in seven fatalities so far this year. Comparatively, on the same date in 2023, there were 11 fatal crashes resulting in 11 fatalities. It is important to note that these numbers are subject to change as the investigation progresses and more information becomes available.
