On Tuesday, March 12, at approximately 1:09 a.m., a tragic incident unfolded at the intersection of East 7th Street and Red River Street in Austin. As reported by the Austin Police Department, a crash involving a vehicle and two pedestrians occurred, resulting in the death of one individual at the scene. The second pedestrian sustained severe injuries and was rushed to a local hospital.
According to the authorities, the suspect vehicle involved in the incident fled the scene and continued east on East 7th street. The vehicle is currently described as unidentified, and the investigation into the matter is ongoing.
In response to this unfortunate event, it was stated that this incident marks Austin's 13th fatal crash of 2024, leading to a total of 13 fatalities for the year. Contrasting this with the statistics from the previous year, on the same date in 2023, there were 20 fatal crashes resulting in 20 fatalities.
As the investigation into this incident remains active, the Austin Police Department's Vehicular Homicide unit has urged anyone with information to come forward.
