Austin Parks and Recreation invites the community to celebrate LGBTQIA+ Pride Month at DAC Nights on Wednesdays, June 5, June 12, and June 26 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Dougherty Arts Center (DAC), located at 1110 Barton Springs Rd.
DAC Nights is a free, all-ages event series that typically occurs monthly, providing the public with opportunities to engage in the arts while fostering community connections. Each month's event focuses on a new artistic and cultural topic of interest, with this month dedicated to LGBTQIA+ Pride.
On Wednesday, June 5, queer Texan poet Ariana Brown will perform her poetry, exploring themes of queerness, black personhood, and liberated futures. This event is open to participants aged 15 and up. Attendees are encouraged to register in advance due to limited seating.
On Wednesday, June 12, Behind the Zines will conduct a workshop on making and crafting zines—an art form deeply rooted in Queer history and self-expression. Teaching artists will assist participants in creating their own zines.
On Wednesday, June 26, the focus will shift to “Craftivism” and sustainability with DAC staff and guest instructor Cidnye Stott during DAC Nights: Mend Mania. According to online publication them., “needlepoint is likely the campiest art form in human history,” a sentiment echoed by the DAC.
