As Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) celebrates its 25th anniversary, the airport reflects on its journey from inception to becoming a significant hub in Texas. Built on the grounds of the former Bergstrom Air Force Base, AUS stands as a testament to progress and change.
In an exclusive interview, Chuck Naeve, a structural engineer who played a pivotal role in designing the Barbara Jordan Terminal, shared insights into the early days of AUS. "I am the Structural Engineer of Record for the original Barbara Jordan Terminal," said Naeve. At that time, he was with JQ & Associates and has continued to work on various terminal additions through AEC & AEC-Way.
Naeve recounted his unexpected involvement in the project while searching for opportunities to return to Texas from London. "Through friends in Austin, I learned of an opportunity to work for JQ on the new Austin Airport project," he explained. Initially expecting a renovation of Mueller Airport, he was surprised by plans for a new terminal at Bergstrom Air Force Base.
Discussing challenges and successes, Naeve highlighted the design vision of Larry Speck, FAIA: "Larry wanted the room to resemble a grand Texas landscape with great live oaks extending majestic arms." The collaborative effort led to creating primary expressed steel trusses resembling tree limbs.
Reflecting on his experience at AUS, Naeve mentioned enjoying late-night returns when the terminal is quiet. "I recognize my old friend, the terminal... Tomorrow the humming will resume," he noted.
Regarding ongoing expansions at AUS, Naeve emphasized teamwork: "An airport is such a complex and beautiful problem... Our AUS leaders are more like orchestral conductors." He advised designing adaptable spaces that reflect Austin's spirit.
Naeve expressed fondness for various aspects of Barbara Jordan Terminal: natural light, live music, local food, and architecture. "Often there is a defining moment in a career when all comes together in an important work. That defining moment for me was the Barbara Jordan Terminal."
