Washington, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul, chairman emeritus of the House Committee on Homeland Security, released a statement today addressing reports that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency's non-detained docket has surged to over seven million cases this fiscal year.
"President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas systematically unraveled our nation's laws and implemented a mass catch-and-release scheme — the magnet for illegal immigration and crime at our southern border," said Rep. McCaul. "The result: More than seven million people, the population size of nearly nine states, are living in our communities while they await the adjudication of their claims. President Biden has all the tools he needs to stop the madness — tools like Remain in Mexico, a 30-year-old statute he rescinded immediately after entering office. He simply chooses not to close the floodgates."
As chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Rep. McCaul has repeatedly criticized the administration for rescinding Remain in Mexico, a policy designed to keep migrants in Mexico while they awaited their asylum hearings. In May 2023, he wrote and championed a provision in H.R.2, House Republicans’ Secure the Border Act, to compel the administration to reinstate Remain in Mexico.
