Elijah Scott, a student at the Liberal Arts and Science Academy (LASA) in Austin, Texas, has been recognized for his significant contributions to local environmental initiatives. As part of the Austin Youth Climate Equity Council, a program by EcoRise and sponsored by the City’s Office of Sustainability, Scott has actively engaged in climate action projects aimed at making Austin net-zero by 2040.
Scott's journey began with his participation in the Austin Youth Climate Equity Council, where he utilized skills in field research, data analysis, project planning, and teamwork. His involvement led to an internship with EcoRise’s summer program supporting Austin’s Cities Connecting Children to Nature initiative. "I was inspired by EcoRise’s mission of mobilizing a new generation of leaders to design healthy, just, and thriving communities for all through environmental education and sustainability," said Scott.
During his internship, Scott applied ecological mapping skills acquired from his studies to create comprehensive online maps highlighting ecological features at various schools in Austin. These maps are intended to demonstrate environmental inequalities across neighborhoods. He also volunteered at Festival Beach Food Forest and worked on various eco-friendly projects alongside land managers and community members.
"The most rewarding part has been the feeling of connection to nature and communities," Scott shared. He emphasized that collaboration with diverse individuals working towards a common goal was particularly fulfilling.
However, translating academic skills into professional settings posed challenges. "Working in a professional setting required increased collaboration and information exchange," he noted. Despite these challenges, Scott believes these experiences have strengthened his existing skills and equipped him with new ones beneficial for his future career.
Looking ahead, Scott envisions a career as an urban planner where he can empower communities to make sustainable decisions. "I'm excited about what Austin's future holds in terms of being eco-friendly and sustainable," he said.
Scott advises others not to be discouraged by the enormity of climate issues but to recognize their individual contributions as part of a collective movement toward a greener future.
