The Austin City Council is inviting applications for positions on the five-member Municipal Civil Service Commission. This commission is responsible for overseeing certain employment matters within the city government, particularly concerning disciplinary actions and appeals from city employees.
The commission requires a commitment of about 20 hours each month, with hearings usually taking up an entire business day twice a month. These roles are voluntary, and appointees will serve until May 2027.
This initiative stems from a decision by Austin voters in November 2012 to create a municipal civil service system for city employees not covered by state law. The Municipal Civil Service Commission was established to recommend rules to the council and to adjudicate appeals on various disciplinary matters involving city employees.
Applications will be accepted until all positions are filled. Interested individuals can apply through the City of Austin's online platform. Selected candidates may be invited for interviews during meetings of the Austin City Council Audit & Finance Committee.
"Applications will remain open until positions have been filled."
"The MCS Commission hears and makes final, binding decision on appeals of City employees resulting from a Disciplinary Probation, Disciplinary Suspension, Demotion, Discharge, or Denial of Promotion."
"If rule revisions are brought forward by the MCS Director, the MCS Commission will recommend modifications to the City Council."
